Automated and Remotely Operated ICSI

Mendizabal et al, ASRM

Injection of sperm into human eggs (ICSI) is a complex technique that requires embryology expertise and manual control of specialized equipment. This study describes an intelligent robotic system that can perform ICSI with a human operator issuing computer commands. The system also uses artificial intelligence (AI) for some tasks like selecting sperm. After testing in animal models, this innovative system was used to perform ICSI for 4 patients; it achieved comparable lab results to manual ICSI and one ongoing pregnancy was established. This means that full automation of ICSI and standardization of this important method are within reach.
