Use and Understanding of AI in the ART Laboratory: An International Survey
Palmer et al, 2024
This study surveyed over 700 clinical embryologists—laboratory professionals who work in fertility clinics—to find out how familiar they are with artificial intelligence (AI), how they view its potential use in their laboratories, and what concerns they have.
Overall, a majority of participants were aware of AI and saw its promise in improving certain steps of assisted reproduction treatments, like selecting the best embryos.
However, they also worried about some practical and ethical issues. These included how AI might affect their jobs, what it means for their relationships with patients, and whether relying on AI could raise new moral questions.
More experienced professionals were generally less concerned about the workplace changes AI could bring, while younger professionals showed more anxiety about these issues. Most embryologists had a positive attitude towards AI, provided that developers involve them in the process. Doing so can help ensure that these tools fit well into the clinical setting and uphold important values in fertility care.
